The South African Triage Scale does so much more than just sorting patients in a busy emergency unit. Not only does it drastically reduce the waiting time from door to doctor for those too ill to wait, it actually reduces the overall waiting time for all patients. It empowers nurses to safely triage patients through an easy to use colour coding system. It aids clinicians in making early decisions for those in need of urgent attention and hereby reduces morbidity and mortality. It improves patient experience and understanding of their clinical condition. The South African Triage Group is committed to providing sufficient training and support for nurse triage providers. As already evident in international literature, our national team of multidisciplinary heath care professionals continue to improve the existing South African Triage Scale through reliable research. Looking into the future, we endeavour to implement the South African Triage Scale in every private and public emergency unit in South Africa.
